Sober Weekend Bliss

Starting on my sober journey was very trying and I had no idea how I was going to have fun weekends without drinking. Below I am sharing my top tips for having the best sober weekends. These strategies have really worked for me and I hope that they will help you too! Just remember, being part of the sober weekend club is easy as long as you have the right mindset!

My Tips for Sober Weekend Bliss:

  1. Plan ahead for success

This may sound obvious, but having a plan for the weekend is super important (especially in early sobriety). Something I did very early on in my journey was to think about how I wanted my weekends to look and feel. I have created a sort of “weekend template” for myself so that I can make sure to fit in all the things that are important to me in my life right now. Of course, it will be different for everyone but here’s a look at what my “perfect” weekend looks like:

Friday Night: Quiet Reflection & Journaling, Quality Time with my Husband

Saturday: Planned activity (usually with friends) with encouragement to try something new!

Sunday Morning: chores around the house & preparing for the week ahead

Sunday Evening: swimming at the gym and winding down for early bedtime

  2. Share your intentions with “trusted advisors“

If you have recently stopped drinking or become sober curious, I highly recommend that you let a few people know. This will not only give some external accountability but it can allow for conversations with loved ones about the feelings that are coming up around this topic. I have personally found it much easier when I have had people going at the sober lifestyle with me, rather than trying to do it on my own. This has even led to a few people telling me that they now want to try being sober because they can see how much happier and more lively I am!

  3. Try something new

Planning is one thing, but finding YOUR THING is something that can only be achieved by trying new things! One thing I like to do is have a look online to see what events are happening where I am and if something looks fun, I book a ticket and put it on my calendar. If there isn’t much going on during a particular weekend then I always try to plan a new place to check out or to spend time outside. 4. Take time to rest

It took me a LONG time to appreciate this, especially as someone who is highly motivated and extroverted but the weekends are sacred time for rest and recovery. How can we smash all of our goals if we are constantly overworked and under-rested? As you can see from my weekend template in tip 1, it’s not overly crowded and full of things. I have put a serious emphasis on rest in order to help me remain energized throughout the week.
